The S.C. Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (SCIAAI) is proud to announce the 2022 3rd Quarter Training Seminar. The instructor will be SCIAAI President Michael R. Roarty.
The first responder (Police Officer/Firefighter) is usually the first to arrive on the scene of a fire and may have crucial information related to the fire that needs to be reviewed by the trained fire investigator. Some of the most vital evidence in a fire investigation is derived from the fires discovery and the initial 911 caller. All these facts must be established and properly documented at the very outset of a fire investigation.
FIRE SCENE DOCUMENTATION involves the NFIRS report, Fire Scene Witnesses, Scene Security, Fire Suppression Operations, and Post-Extinguishment conditions. One of the core responsibilities of a Fire Investigator is proper fire scene documentation that follows the Scientific Method within NFPA 921. This documents the investigator's methodology helps support his/her hypothesis and brings credibility to the expert conclusions when presented at trial. This two-day program will discuss proper fire scene methodology, documentation, photographing, and touch on the basics of advanced imaging, such as Matter Port Scanning and the use of drones during documentation. It will also discuss spoliation, evidence collection and preservation, and establishing a proper chain of custody. Multiple fire scene forms and templates will be made available to the student(s), so one may take back and use the different forms within their department.
INSTRUCTOR: Michael R. Roarty IAAI-CFI/NAFI CFEI(v)
Mr. Roarty holds a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Technology from Sienna Heights University, is a Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) with the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) with the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI) is a Past President of the Michigan Chapter-IAAI and current President of the South Carolina Chapter-IAAI.
Mr. Roarty has wide-ranging expertise in Fire Scene Reconstruction and experience in conducting live burns, and fire tests of materials and experiments, with the Michigan State Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Fire & Materials Research Laboratory. Additionally, he has extensive experience in testifying as an expert in criminal and civil trials in United States District Courts of MI, OH, IN, SC and the Circuit, and District Courts of MI, NC and S.C., and the Courts of Common Pleas within the State of Ohio.
Mr. Roarty is a Director for the International Association of Arson Investigators and facilitator for the (IAAI) Expert Witness Courtroom Testimony Program and has taught throughout the United States. He is a two-time graduate of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD, and is a battle-tested expert in State and Federal Courts throughout the United States.
This training is scheduled for a minimum of 16 contact hours. Testing options will be discussed at the training event. The member attendance fee is $25, and the nonmember attendance fee is $100. Lunch is on your own.
