Fire & Explosion Investigations

Involving Propane and Natural Gas

The S.C. Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (SCIAAI) is proud to announce the 2021 3rd Quarter Training Seminar. The instructor, will be Jerry R. Tindal, MSME, P.E. with SAFE Laboratories & Engineering Corp., Inc. The program topics include: NFPA 921, 2021 Edition, Chapter 7, 10, and 22. The intent of this course is for the attendee to: Obtain useful information and techniques related to performing effective fire & explosion investigations where propane or natural gas are or may be involved. Apply that information and techniques to draw clear and reliable conclusions concerning origin and cause. To that end, the presentation will be substantially based upon actual cases some of which were also developed into peer reviewed papers. Relevant provisions of NFPA 921 will be reviewed and applied congruent with the case studies presented. Some of the topics considered include: Underground gas piping system failures, Underground gas migration, Aboveground gas leaks, discharge, mixing, spread and dispersion considerations, Ignition of fugitive fuel gases, Basic properties of propane and natural gas, Basic gas system components and arrangements for propane and natural gas, Codes, standards and regulations related to gas piping systems, Codes, standards and regulations related to gas-fired appliances and equipment, Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST), Gas regulator operating characteristics and failures, Evaluation and testing of gas regulators including fire-damaged regulators, Explosion scene safety, Explosion terminology, Preparing and pre-planning for the fire or explosion scene, Collecting and evaluating information from data acquisition systems, Explosion overpressure calculations, Explosion force vector diagrams, Fuel material, geometry and orientation considerations, Propane stain tube testing, leak testing and flow testing, Flash fires, fire dynamics, fire patterns, smoldering fires, Gas control valves, Gas water heaters, Gas fireplaces, Log lighters, Gas furnaces and heaters, Gas grills, Restaurant gas-fired cooking equipment, Boilers and Industrial Ovens, Flammable refrigerants, and Overfilled propane cylinders and tanks.

This training is scheduled for a minimum of 8 contact hours. Testing options will be discussed at the training event. Member attendance fee is Free and non-member attendance fee is $100. Lunch is on your own.  Pre-registration is required: Register online for this class at www.sciaai.org. The cutoff date for registration is Friday, September 10, 2021. Non-member attendance must be pre-approved by the SCIAAI Board. Pending applicants pay “member fee” to attend.
